Various eye conditions and treatment options were discussed above. Corneal scarring and irregular cornea can cause blurry vision, and treatment may involve specialized contact lenses or corneal transplantation. Ocular Surface Disease (OSD) affects the cornea and conjunctiva, causing dryness and irritation, and treatment options include lubricating eye drops and anti-inflammatory medications. Refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism result in blurred vision, which can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery. Therapeutic lens wear involves using specialized contact lenses to manage various eye conditions and promote healing. Each condition requires proper diagnosis and personalized treatment to improve vision and maintain ocular health.
Keratoconus
Keratoconus is a progressive eye disorder characterized by thinning and bulging of the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. It leads to a cone-shaped deformation of the cornea, causing vision distortion and astigmatism. Keratoconus can result in blurry vision, increased sensitivity to light, and difficulty with night vision.
Corneal Graft
Corneal graft, also known as corneal transplantation or keratoplasty, is a surgical procedure where a damaged or diseased cornea is replaced with a healthy cornea from a donor. It is performed to restore clear vision and treat conditions such as corneal scarring, corneal thinning, or corneal degeneration. The donor cornea is carefully matched to the recipient’s eye, and the surgery involves removing the damaged cornea and suturing the donor cornea in its place. Corneal grafts can help improve vision and alleviate symptoms associated with corneal abnormalities.
Corneal Scarring & Irregular Conrnea
Corneal scarring and irregular cornea refer to conditions where the cornea becomes damaged or distorted, resulting in blurry vision and other visual disturbances. Treatment options include specialized contact lenses and, in severe cases, corneal transplantation to restore clear vision and address the underlying issues.
Ocular Surface Disease
Ocular Surface Disease (OSD) refers to a group of conditions that affect the surface of the eye, including the cornea and conjunctiva. It is characterized by symptoms such as dryness, redness, irritation, and blurred vision. OSD can be caused by factors such as dry eye syndrome, inflammation, allergies, or contact lens wear. Treatment options for OSD may include artificial tears, lubricating eye drops, anti-inflammatory medications, and lifestyle modifications. Proper diagnosis and management of OSD are crucial to alleviate symptoms, improve ocular comfort, and maintain healthy ocular surface function.
Refractive Error
Refractive error is a common vision problem caused by an abnormal eye shape, resulting in blurry or distorted vision. Types include nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery. Regular eye exams are important for diagnosis and management.
Therapeutic Lens Wear
Therapeutic lens wear involves using specialized contact lenses to manage eye conditions and promote healing. They are prescribed by eye care professionals to alleviate symptoms and improve visual function in specific cases.

Cian graduated from Dublin Institute of Technology in 2014 with an honours degree in Optometry. During his time in DIT, he was awarded a clinical placement at the University of Houston College of Optometry in Texas, where his passion for fitting medical contact lenses began. Seeing what a huge impact these lenses could have on patients’ vision made Cian realise this was where he wanted to concentrate his efforts. On returning from Houston, Cian was admitted as a Fellow of the Association of Optometrists Ireland and began his career at the prestigious Wellington Eye Clinic in Dublin. At the Wellington Eye Clinic, Cian began fitting medical contact lenses as well as performing refractive evaluations for patients looking to undergo LASIK, PRK, ICL and other intra-ocular surgeries. In 2021, Cian began working at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital where he is the head of medical contact lens services. Cian is a Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association (FBCLA) and a Fellow of the International Association of Contact Lens Educators (FIACLE), the only Irish optometrist to hold this qualification.”

Thanks Cian, having been to many opticians for years telling me that I could never wear contact lenses, I am finally glasses-free.
After many years of having to wear glasses, I am finally able to wear contact lenses, thanks to Cian. Mountain biking in the rain is so much more enjoyable now!!
