Scleral Profilometry Guided Fitting

Scleral profilometry guided fitting is an advanced approach used in the fitting of scleral contact lenses. It involves the use of cutting-edge technology, such as scleral profilometry, to precisely map and measure the shape of the ocular surface, specifically the sclera. By scanning and analyzing the eye’s surface, a detailed topographical map is created, which guides the customization and design of scleral lenses that perfectly conform to the individual’s unique eyes shape. This highly personalized fitting process enhances comfort, stability, and visual acuity, particularly for individuals with irregular corneas or complex ocular conditions, ensuring an optimal fit and improved overall vision.

Corneal RGPs (Rigid Gas Permeable)

Corneal RGPs (Rigid Gas Permeable) are a type of contact lens that offers excellent vision correction and durability. Made from rigid materials that allow oxygen to pass through, these lenses sit directly on the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. Due to their rigid nature, they provide a stable and precise vision correction, especially for individuals with astigmatism, irregular corneas, or other refractive errors. Corneal RGPs offer sharper and clearer vision compared to soft lenses and are suitable for various eye conditions. They provide superior tear exchange, promoting ocular health, and are available in different designs, including toric lenses for astigmatism correction. Soft Lenses

Soft lenses are a type of contact lens made from flexible and water-containing materials, providing exceptional comfort and ease of wear. These lenses are designed to conform to the shape of the cornea and cover a larger portion of the eye, including the sclera. Soft lenses are available in various types, including daily disposables, monthly disposables, and extended wear options, offering flexibility to suit different lifestyles and preferences. They provide a smooth and comfortable fit, making them easy to adapt to and wear for extended periods. Soft lenses are an excellent choice for individuals with mild to moderate refractive errors, and they can correct conditions like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Their water content helps to keep the eyes hydrated, and they are typically more resistant to dislodgement during physical activities. With their comfort and convenience, soft lenses are a popular and reliable option for vision correction.

Hybrid Lenses

Hybrid lenses combine the advantages of both rigid gas permeable (RGP) and soft contact lenses, offering a unique solution for vision correction. These lenses feature a rigid center for crisp and clear vision, similar to RGP lenses, while the outer portion is made of a soft and comfortable material. The rigid center corrects refractive errors with precision, including astigmatism, while the soft outer ring provides enhanced comfort and ease of wear. Cosmetic Contact Lenses

Cosmetic contact lenses are specially designed lenses that allow individuals to change the appearance of their eyes for cosmetic purposes and certain eye conditions or injuries. These lenses are available in a wide range of colors, patterns, and designs, offering options for enhancing or completely transforming one’s eye color and appearance, as well as more subtle enhancements like enhancing the natural eye color. Cosmetic contact lenses are typically made from soft materials and are available both with and without vision correction.
It is important to note that cosmetic contact lenses should be obtained with a prescription and under the guidance of an eye care professional to ensure proper fit, comfort, and eye health.

OrthoKeratology

Orthokeratology, often referred to as Ortho-K or corneal reshaping therapy, is a non-surgical method for temporarily correcting refractive errors in the eye, primarily near-sightedness (myopia), but also sometimes astigmatism and mild farsightedness. It involves the use of specially designed rigid gas permeable contact lenses that are worn overnight. These lenses gently reshape the cornea, the transparent front surface of the eye, so that light entering the eye is properly focused on the retina, resulting in improved vision during waking hours without the need for glasses or contact lenses. Orthokeratology is often considered for individuals who want an alternative to glasses or regular contact lenses during the day, especially athletes, people with active lifestyles, and those who find conventional contact lenses uncomfortable. OrthoKeratology is also indicated as a method of slowing down the rate of increase of myopia.

Cian Gidea

Cian graduated from Dublin Institute of Technology in 2014 with an honours degree in Optometry. During his time in DIT, he was awarded a clinical placement at the University of Houston College of Optometry in Texas, where his passion for fitting medical contact lenses began. Seeing what a huge impact these lenses could have on patients’ vision made Cian realise this was where he wanted to concentrate his efforts. On returning from Houston, Cian was admitted as a Fellow of the Association of Optometrists Ireland and began his career at the prestigious Wellington Eye Clinic in Dublin. At the Wellington Eye Clinic, Cian began fitting medical contact lenses as well as performing refractive evaluations for patients looking to undergo LASIK, PRK, ICL and other intra-ocular surgeries. In 2021, Cian began working at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital where he is the head of medical contact lens services. Cian is a Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association (FBCLA) and a Fellow of the International Association of Contact Lens Educators (FIACLE), the only Irish optometrist to hold this qualification.”
